Q: I am going to the Caribbean on Ocean Village for the new year, I don’t know a great deal (anything in fact) about this area. I heard some bad stuff about some of the ports regarding the criminal element, anyone got any advice here please? Also any suggestions for chill out beaches would be gratefully received.

If I could pick up on the excellent advice given by Rum Runner, I would never take a wallet ashore in any country. Too many people have been mugged for their wallet wherever in the world. I take an amount of cash to see me through the day & one credit card in a secure pocket or even in my shoe. The rest stays in my cabin safe. Just think about cancelling all your credit cards whilst at sea using the ships telephone system, no way of accessing money for the rest of your cruise & no means of paying your bill at the end. It happens! Regards.

The worst island is probably the most beautiful and it is Jamaica, here you need to be very aware and street wise. Nassau in the Bahamas was worse than it is now but again be aware of dangerous spots. Never put yourself in an isolated or narrow spot anywhere but in general you will not have any trouble as long as you just think. We love the Caribbean and have explored it all over with only one small incident in over twenty years. ....Neil

Tricky one, this. Some islands are idyllic with hardly any crime at all and others have pushers and prowlers a plenty. Dont wear flashy jewels or watches and dont be too public with your wallet. Always keep to the main thoroughfares and dont be lured into backstreets. Try and stay with a group or go on organised excursions. Most people are outwardly friendly but that doesn't mean they dont have a hidden agenda. Just stick to the normal tourist rules and keep aware of all thats going on around you. You will love it.
